Women power farming in San Isidro
Wilma Puno, 75, dispelled the notion that only men can work in the farms, saying that for 40 years, she has maintained 1.8 hectares of coconut and cacao farm.
“Kung kaya ng lalake, kayang-kaya naming mga babae,” she proudly proclaimed.
Puno has been using agricultural practices such as mulching and pruning to make her crops more productive. Some of the laborers according to her, are also women.
Aside from farming, Puno also produces copra and tableya to be sold to local traders.
“Ito ang nakapagpaaral sa limang anak ko,” she added, noting that her sons and daughter are now living comfortable lives.
Members of the PEF board visited model and demo farms in San Isidro, Davao del Norte to look into the different approaches and assess the interventions the Foundation is undertaking to increase the income of households in the municipality.
